FAQ

What's a chatelaine?

A chatelaine refers to the decorative clasp with chains that hangs from a belt or waistband. Historically, chatelaines were worn by the mistress of the manor or household. Because they belonged primarily to women, they would contain the keys to the home, as well as charms, heirlooms, and small coin purses. They were most popular during the Victorian period, when women were more harshly confined to domestic spheres, as a way to maintain autonomy and authority over their position.

Etymologically, the word “chatelaine” originates from French, meaning the keeper of the keys to a castle.

Here at Chatelaine Creative, we encourage you to be the keeper of the keys to your story.
